(Jan 31) Morning Journeys for Early Childhood

Betty Jane Enno

This presentation includes ideas for morning journeys for the Kindergarten child and indoor/outdoor activities supporting the neuro-sensory-motor system and the foundational senses. The children awaken to joy in their Life Sense when participating in various developmental movements and physical activities in the fresh air and sunshine. An obstacle course, low-ropes course, and mat work are examples of what will be shared.

Betty Jane Enno has been a class teacher and Kindergarten teacher at the Austin Waldorf School in Texas and has also been an international mentor for the past thirty-five years. She is an AHE graduate and is a Licensed Pediatric Massage Therapist specializing in integrative movement activities for the young child.

(Feb 28) Pencils and Brushes: Real Tools for the Classroom

Mary Jo Oresti and Becky Rutherford

Our presenters will give a demonstration of the therapeutic painting exercise, Form Painting. These simple paintings of dissolving forms promote deeper breathing and bring fluidity to the thinking process. Becky Rutherford will give a history of the method and Mary Jo will bring anecdotes of the effects of this method in the classroom.

Following this, we will do a review of shaded drawing, an exercise given by Dr. Steiner and included in Audrey McAllen's book, The Extra Lesson. This exercise supports attention and the will. We will take a few minutes to draw and then share about different ways to use this practice in the classroom.

Mary Jo Oresti is the founder of the AHE Educational Support Program and was the initial faculty member of the Detroit Waldorf School Supplementary Program. Becky Rutherford has an art background and was a class teacher at Camp Hill, Beaver Run. She now teaches in Camp Hill and other therapeutic initiatives, traveling internationally and presenting both locally and on line.

(March 27) Afternoon Activities for Rising First Graders

Shari Carlson

Each afternoon, the oldest Kindergarten students at Lake Champlain Waldorf School in Shelburne, Vermont are led through engaging activities that include integrative floor exercises, gross motor movements, balance and core work as well as auditory and visual games. Learn about the ways that these children spend their afternoons while joyfully engaging their bodies and senses.

Shari Carlson teaches Parent and Child classes in the mornings and rising first graders each afternoon at LCWS, where she has worked with early childhood students for fifteen years. She is an AHE graduate and also holds a certificate from the Blomberg Rhythmic Movement Training. Her three children, now adults, are all LCWS alums.
